Upon check-in, you’ll almost always get preferential boarding, and often get assistance getting the car seat safely to the plane.

Installing a car seat on an airplane is nearly identical to installing it in your own car. Many parents say it’s even easier, since an airplane lap belts are easier to adjust. Once installed, you have the advantage of not only a safe space, but a familiar space for your toddler to relax during the flight.

Additionally, you have the advantage of having your own car seat once you touch down. No worries about what kind of seat you might get stuck with at a car rental counter.

Safety Harnesses

If the idea of hauling your toddler’s car seat on a plane is a bit overwhelming, you still have very safe options.

In recent years, several companies have developed different types of safety harnesses for traveling toddlers.

Some of these safety harnesses work by slipping a light-weight harness onto your toddler, and then securing the straps of the harness through your own lap belt. With these types, your toddler is on your lap for the flight. This might be an advantage for kids who are fearful of flying and need the security that comes with being in a parents arms.

There are other harnesses that don’t require mom or dad to have the child on their lap. These types of harnesses integrate with the existing lap belt and make it more “kid friendly” and safe.

Either choice of harness has the advantage of being lightweight and easy to carry on and off the plane.
