How Travel Insurance Is Becoming Necessary For Any Trip Outside The Country

Offers for travel insurance seem to be popping up everywhere and buyers are stepping up to the plate more than ever. Travel insurance claims are also on the rise, primarily due to the fact that so many more travel insurance policies are now being underwritten. What used to be seen as simple flight insurance that protected you from a loss while you were in the air is now being sold as comprehensive insurance that covers everything from lost or delayed baggage to full medical benefits and even loss resulting from terrorism or piracy.

The list of benefits available through today’s travel insurance policies is wide and varied. Basic policies can be obtained already prepackaged with certain benefits included or policies can be custom designed to fit your explicit needs, put together in an a la carte fashion. As a rule of thumb, more benefits with fewer limits and/or exclusions means higher premium costs, but you can pretty much order up coverage to fit your exact specifications.

Certain benefits are commonly contained in almost all travel insurance coverage, such as loss sustained as the result of delayed or canceled flights, lost or delayed baggage and accidental death or dismemberment benefits. Other popular options include medical and hospital benefits, emergency evacuation benefits and the ability to cancel a planned trip and still be reimbursed for monies already spent on nonrefundable trip-related costs.

The necessity of having reliable travel insurance coverage these days cannot be overstated, especially for those traveling to areas where there is known instability or potential risk from civil unrest, terrorist activities or even a possibility of severe weather affecting one’s travel activities. If a policyholder comes up against a hurricane, a typhoon, civil riots, erupting volcanoes or anything else that can cause a trip to be delayed, interrupted or canceled, financial loss can be reimbursed through a well-written policy.

Travel insurance claims are an even more critical factor when someone falls ill or becomes injured during their travels and requires hospitalization or even medical evacuation or repatriation. While most people may not consider the potential of such a situation, becoming ill or injured in a foreign country will rarely be covered by current U.S.-based medical insurance policies. Without reliable travel insurance medical and hospitalization coverage you’re basically on your own.

The above-mentioned benefits are just some of the many available. Another benefit contained in most policies and perhaps one of the most widely used doesn’t involve a claim but merely a phone call for assistance. All of the better policies include a toll-free number that the insured can call in the event of an emergency or other need for help or assistance.
